Doha, Qatar: The Shark Alliance welcomes Committee approval of a proposal to list the porbeagle shark under the Convention for the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) made today during a day-long debate on sharks. The proposal to add the species to CITES Appendix II was offered by the European Union and co-sponsored by the Pacific island nation of Palau.

Spain: The Shark Alliance is yet again expressing outrage over the continued illegal take of basking sharks in Spain. The shark was landed in Galicia on March 19th; only eighteen days after two of these gentle giants were landed in Northern Spain.

Qatar: Whether to protect eight shark species; spiny dogfish, porbeagle, oceanic whitetip, scalloped hammerhead, great hammerhead, smooth hammerhead, dusky and sandbar sharks ; that are vulnerable to international trade will be a question debated at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
Pew Applauds Maldives Indian Ocean Shark Sanctuary

Washington, DC - In a move lauded by the Pew Environment Group the Maldives today declared its exclusive economic zone (EEZ), 90,000 square kilometers of the Indian Ocean, as a shark sanctuary free from all shark fishing and also banned all imports and exports of shark fins.

The Shark Alliance is expressing outrage over the continued illegal take of basking sharks in Spain. EU vessels have been prohibited from fishing, retaining or landing basking sharks, even if the catch is accidental, since 2006.

Madrid: Representatives from the Shark Alliance, an international shark conservation coalition, today delivered to Spanish authorities a petition signed by over 90,000 citizens from 16 European countries urging Spain to end its opposition to improving the EU ban on finning - cutting off a shark's fins and discarding its body at sea; and lead the EU toward a more effective finning regulation.
