The EU Council of Fisheries Ministers today failed to set zero catch limits for economically valuable porbeagle and spurdog sharks, as proposed by the European Commission and scientists.

Late word that EU Fisheries Ministers agreed today to fully protect four highly endangered shark and ray species helped to ease conservationists' dismay over the adoption of excessive 2009 quotas for severely overfished spurdog and porbeagle sharks.

In the run-up to the infamous December meeting of the European Council of Ministers, the Shark Alliance is calling on Fisheries Ministers to adopt proposals from the European Commission to protect endangered sharks and rays.

Not usually famed for their angelic behaviour, sharks are under the spotlight at this week's EU Fisheries Council meeting.
