70 conservation, marine science, diving and sport fishing groups from around the world are urging the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) to reject European Union (EU) and Australian proposals that could weaken the regional ban on shark finning, the wasteful practice of cutting off a shark's valuable fins and discarding the body at sea.

With many UK shark species threatened with extinction in the wild the launch this year of the Community Plan of Action for Sharks couldn't come too soon.  Working with senior UK government officials the Shark Trust has secured cross-party support for the plan, which places the UK in a strong position in Europe as potential champions of shark conservation.

Today, representatives from OCEANA and Shark Alliance Member Groups, Ecologistas en Acción, SUBMON and OCEANIA diving world, met with Spanish fisheries officials from the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs to hand over nearly 13,000 petitions from Spanish citizens calling for better shark protection and to discuss Spain's position on the new European Union (EU) Plan of Action for Sharks.

As the United Nations' fisheries body looks back at ten years of slow progress under their International Plan of Action for Sharks (IPOA), the Shark Alliance is urging European Union (EU) Member States to ensure implementation of the EU's contribution to the IPOA ; the EU Plan of Action for Sharks -- and to encourage other countries to step up shark conservation efforts on a global scale.

Brussels. Today the Shark Alliance launches its EU Member State Challenge, an exercise in tracking and publicizing countries' activities with regard to the European Commission's new Plan of Action for the Conservation of Sharks.
