Shark Alliance Delivers European Citizens' Plea to Spain

Madrid: Representatives from the Shark Alliance, an international shark conservation coalition, today delivered to Spanish authorities a petition signed by over 90,000 citizens from 16 European countries urging Spain to end its opposition to improving the EU ban on finning - cutting off a shark's fins and discarding its body at sea; and lead the EU toward a more effective finning regulation.

The Shark Alliance is condemning the continued illegal take of basking sharks in Spain, evidenced this week by the display of a juvenile of the species at a supermarket fish counter in Santander.  The harmless, plankton-feeding basking shark, the world's second largest fish, is classified by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as Endangered in the Northeast Atlantic.  It has been illegal for EU vessels to fish, retain or land basking sharks .....

In the run-up to the EU fishing quota negotiations, BLOOM Association is calling on the French government to give full support to the protection of the porbeagle shark, a close relative of the great white and mako.  France is home to Europe's only remaining targeted porbeagle fishery.  The population is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as Critically Endangered.  Scientists and the European Commission have recommended ending .....

After meeting for ten days, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) refused to end fishing for Atlantic bluefin tuna.  Instead, ICCAT set the catch limit for bluefin, considered the most valuable fish in the sea, at 13,500.

Brussels - The Shark Alliance is condemning another illegal landing of a basking shark. The shark was approximately 4.20 meters (14 feet) long, taken by an Irish fishing vessel.

The Shark Alliance, a coalition of 76 organisations worldwide, initiated and co-ordinated by the Pew Environment Group, is marking the end of European Shark Week, by urging European fisheries ministers to respond to public calls for a stronger EU prohibition of shark “finning,” the wasteful practice of slicing off a shark's fins and discarding the body at sea.

WASHINGTON; Matt Rand, coordinator of the Shark Alliance and director of Global Shark Conservation for the Pew Environment Group, today issued the following statement on the record number of shark proposals submitted for consideration to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), an international treaty designed to prevent trade in endangered species and regulate trade in species at risk.
