STRASBOURG - The Shark Alliance welcomes the European Parliament's vote to close loopholes in the European Union ban on shark finning, the practice of slicing off a shark's fins and discarding the body at sea.

In light of the upcoming vote in the European Parliament to amend the regulation on shark finning, we're asking all Italian MEPs to support a ban on removing shark fins at sea, with no exceptions.

BRUSSELS - The European Parliament Fisheries Committee voted today in a puzzling and inconsistent manner on a suite of amendments that form their response to a European Commission proposal to strengthen the EU ban on shark “finning” (slicing off a shark's fins and discarding the body at sea). Votes on most amendments passed or failed by a narrow margin and produced contradictory messages that both reject and support loopholes that hinder finning ban enforcement.

After six years of work, the Shark Alliance is sharply focused on the Members of European Parliament (MEPs) that serve on the European Parliament Fisheries Committee as they meet in Brussels to vote on the European Commission's proposal to close major loopholes in the EU ban on shark finning (slicing off a shark's fins and discarding the body at sea).

The Shark Alliance today published an advert on the back page of the European Voice newspaper urging MEPs on the Fisheries Committee to join the growing chorus calling to amend the EU ban on shark finning.

NETHERLANDS - Today, anglers, conservationists and politicians attended a special shark tag and release trip on the Oosterschelde. During the tour organised by the Dutch Anglers Association, smooth hound sharks were caught with the aim to tag the animals and then release them again into the sea.

London, 8th August: Minister for the Natural Environment and Fisheries, Richard Benyon with Julie Girling Member of the European Parliament, took to the water today, to swim with sharks and demonstrate their support for shark conservation and for closing the loopholes in the EU ban on shark ‘finning’ (slicing off a shark’s fins and discarding the body at sea).
