The conservation groups are urging Spain to go further than current, inadequate proposal to stop fishing of hammerheads and thresher sharks by banning all retention of these incidentally taken, threatened species and doing the same for porbeagle sharks and other particularly vulnerable sharks taken in Spanish fisheries.The Shark Alliance is represented in Spain by Ecologistas en Acción, SUBMON, CRAM Foundation, Kenna Ecodiving, and OCEANIA diving world. Ten years ago, in response to growing concern over depletion of the world's shark populations, governments of the United Nations adopted an International Plan of Action for Sharks* and with it pledged to produce shark conservation plans for their waters and fishing regions.

Proposals from the European Community (EC) and Australia that threatened to create new loopholes in the Indian Ocean ban on shark finning ; the wasteful practice of slicing off a shark's fins and discarding the body at sea -- were defeated today at the annual meeting of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC).
