As the European Parliament debates the future of the EU ban on shark ‘finning', conservation groups, divers, scientists and other members of the public in Germany are highlighting the strong public support for shark conservation.

The UK is a strong supporter for closing the loopholes in the EU ban on shark ‘finning'. Earlier this year, the UK Fisheries Minister, Richard Benyon, received the petition and photos from European Shark Week. He has published an article explaining why he supports a policy of ‘fins attached' and stronger conservation and management measures.

On January 21st 2012, Spain's Official State Bulletin published Order AAA/75/2012 announcing the inclusion of nine shark and ray species in the List of Wild Species under Special Protection. Inclusion in the list delivers on commitments made by Spain as a party to the Protocol concerning Specially Protected Areas and Biological Diversity in the Mediterranean.
