Shark fisheriesShark finning
Shark finning is the practice of slicing off a shark''s fins on-board and then throwing away the body at sea.
This wasteful practice has become common because a shark’s fins are generally more valuable than its meat, setting up an economic incentive to kill sharks only for their fins.
Shark finning contributes to an extraordinary waste of public resources, unsustainable shark mortality and dangerous declines in shark populations.
Over the last 15 years, widespread public outcry against finning has led to bans on the practice in many countries and most of the world’s international waters.
